MATTAPOISETT — A new building commissioner has been named in Mattapoisett.

Christopher Canney was announced as the town’s building commissioner at a Tuesday, March 26 Mattapoisett Select Board meeting.

Previously the building commissioner of Sherborn, Canney grew up in Needham in a construction family, he said during a Jan. 22 interview with the Select Board.

A Westport resident, Canney became certified as a local inspector in 2014. Canney previously also worked as a commercial plans examiner in Framingham, and he has worked for the towns of Holliston and Concord.

“Very happy to have him on board,” Mattapoisett Select Board member Jodi Bauer said at a March 26 Select Board meeting.

During the Jan. 22 interview, Canny said Mattapoisett is a “unique little town” that is “trying to retain the charm.”

“It’s trying to retain the size. I don’t see this town shouting for growth so much, but obviously you have to have smart growth and you also have to be prepared for the 40Bs that are going to be coming,” Canney said, referring to a state statute that permits affordable housing developments to bypass certain zoning bylaws.

In total, the Mattapoisett Select Board interviewed three candidates for the building commissioner position.
