Bulldogs capture conference title at homecoming game
Mattapoisett — What a difference a year makes. On Friday night, the Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 34-19 homecoming win over the Apponequet Lakers, they won the South Coast Conference and they secured a place in the playoffs.
Not bad considering where the Bulldogs were this time last year.
“I’m tired of bringing it up,” said Old Rochester Regional head football coach Justin Kogler, “but last year, starting 0-5, for [the team] to overcome it and turn it around and go 6-0...and be SCC champs, I can’t describe it. It’s a great feeling.”
While they ended up with a solid lead over the Lakers, the Bulldogs were slow to get going on Friday, turning the ball over three times in the first half.
“I think we were a little nervous in the beginning,” Kogler said.
At halftime, the teams were tied 13-13. Harry Smith broke that tie with a touchdown in the third quarter boosted by a two-point conversion that brought the score to 21-13.
The Lakers responded with a touchdown near the end of the third quarter, closing the gap.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Cam Hamilton brought the score to 28-19 and another trip to the end zone for Smith cinched the 34-19 win.
“It’s a great feeling,” said Kogler. “It’s just kind of a blur.”
Next week the Bulldogs will look to make it 7-0 in Fall River.
