Families dance the night away at Old Rochester

MATTAPOISETT — They enjoyed a “Party in the USA’’ at Old Rochester Regional High School.

Girls in grades pre-K through six and their fathers or guardians danced along to the Miley Cyrus earworm and other catchy favorites at the seventh annual Guardians and Angels Dance Saturday, Jan. 20.

The event, hosted by the Old Rochester Regional High School Ambassadors Club, featured a sweet theme of “Candy Land.’’

The club sponsors the dance every year, high school principal and club advisor Michael Devoll said, as part of its ongoing outreach to the community. “We target this time of year because there’s not a lot to do,’’ he said. “We get great feedback.’’

The dance is hardly the club’s only activity. Club members, who range in grade from sophomores to seniors, consider themselves “the big brothers and big sisters of the community,’’ Devoll said. They serve as ushers at graduation, volunteer as tutors and host field days for younger students and welcome educators back to class on the teachers’ first day of school.

Their goal, Devoll said, is to be seen as “the face of the school out in the community.’’

“We try to reach out to the community and show we’re friendly,’’ club member Andrew Porter said.

The community filled the auditorium with shrieks of excitement, dancing in pairs and groups, performing a lively limbo under a candy cane stick and singing along to Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.’’

“I like to be with my friends and dance,’’ Emily Rolfs of Mattapoisett said.

Ross Upton of Rochester brought along his five-year-old daughter Caroline Upton, a student at Rochester Memorial School.

“I thought it would be fun,’’ he said.

That is the goal, Devoll said, noting there can be “a void’’ of dances for the age group.

“Little kids and their families like to dress up,’’ he said. “They like to have fun.’’
