Opening and closing dates set for Mattapoisett Town Meeting agenda

MATTAPOISETT – Dates have been set for the opening and closing of Mattapoisett’s Town Meeting agenda.

At a March 12 meeting, the Mattapoisett Select Board decided on the days between which items can be added to the agenda for the Monday, May 13 Town Meeting.

The warrant will open Tuesday, March 26 and will close 14 days later at the Tuesday, April 9 Select Board meeting.

On April 23, the Select Board will meet with the Mattapoisett Finance Committee to recommend items.

Then, on Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m., the Select Board will meet to “approve the posting of the Town Meeting warrant,” Town Administrator Mike Lorenco said.

While the specific items that will appear on the Town Meeting agenda are unknown, Lorenco said the town is “tackling a multitude of projects right now that will cost the town quite a bit of money.”

The warrant will include a debt exclusion article from Old Rochester Regional High School for “building maintenance purposes” as it looks to match a debt expiring in 2025 from renovating the school, according to Lorenco.

“The goal for [Old Rochester Regional] was to essentially match that cost to the taxpayer and put on new debt to do maintenance on the building,” Lorenco said.

Also impacting the agenda is a proposed state bill called the “Municipal Empowerment Act” that could potentially allow changes to certain taxes, like the excise, meals and short-term rental taxes — fee changes that would need to be approved at Town Meeting, according to Lorenco.
