To the editor:

On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, during the Marion Planning Board meeting, I felt as though I was witnessing a scene reminiscent of an 1800s town meeting, where traditional thinking and behavior threatened to reinforce the subordination of women. 

Throughout the meeting, a couple of my male colleagues continuously interrupted and talked over me, preventing me from effectively communicating my thoughts. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have experienced such behavior from a few self-centered men on or associated with the board.

Despite the constant interruptions, I remained determined to make my points and be heard. I realized that allowing such historical male behaviors to continue would be a radical mistake and would only result in the continued subjugation of women. The overbearing and controlling behavior of a few men associated with the Marion Planning Board constitutes abuse, and it must be stopped.

I believe that everyone would benefit from more civil, considerate and caring behavior on town boards. It is essential to foster an environment of mutual respect, where all voices can be heard and valued equally.

As a professional, I am committed to working together with my colleagues to create a positive and inclusive workplace.
