Mattapoisett — The junior class took home the gold at the Old Rochester Regional High School Winter Olympic Games on Friday afternoon.

The whole school gathered in the gym to compete in events such as musical chairs, an egg toss, a donut eating contest, a three-point shooting contest and tug of war.

Before the opening ceremonies, however, the school took a minute to reflect on Becket Kiernan, the 18-year-old alum who recently died and whose funeral procession had passed outside the school that morning.

"What took place out on Route 6 this morning," Principal Devoll said," I'll never forget that moment. And neither will his family."

Devoll also spoke about what kind of person Kiernan was, and encouraged students who didn't know him personally to learn about him.

"He was one of a kind," he said. "He embodied everything a student should be."

After a tough couple weeks for the school, Devoll said faculty considered canceling the Olympics, but decided it was important for the student body to be there for each other.

"We should be together," he said. "We should laugh and have fun together."

The students seemed to agree, as the raucous classes cheered each other on through the games.

The juniors took first place, the seniors took second, the freshmen came in third and the sophomores placed fourth.
