Four extra delayed starts coming for ORR

Mattapoisett — Old Rochester Regional High School will have four extra delayed start days next year. The ORR School Committee approved two-hour delayed starts for Oct.19, Nov. 16, Dec.1 and Jan. 11 at Wednesday night’s meeting.

The school currently normally 10 delayed starts a year, but the high school will have 14 next year.

The two hours in the morning will be used as working periods for teachers as the school undergoes the self accreditation process.

Principal Mike Devoll said he thinks the delayed starts are better than early dismissal for both students and teachers.

“We don’t want our students to have to leave school at 11:30, leave campus and then have to come back [for practices or club meetings],” he said. “I find that we’re more productive in the morning too…Also I think our students are more alert and ready to learn at 9:30 than at 7:30.”

Additionally, if students need to use the regular morning transportation, teachers will be there to supervise anyone who shows up for the regular 7:30 a.m. start time.

Superintendent Doug White also noted that having a delayed start was also cheaper than having a half day because the school wouldn’t have to pay extra to have just the high school students bussed home at 11:30 a.m.

School committee members emphasized that the four extra delayed starts are only temporary and for the purpose of the accreditation process.

Devoll said the students will follow a two-hour snow delay schedule.
