At Friends Academy, students learn from the very beginning that, more than getting the answers right, it’s important to ask the right questions.  Since its founding by a group of New Bedford Quakers in 1810, the school has sought to provide students, from early childhood to grade 8, with both the academic knowledge and the self confidence to think boldly and to take intellectual risks.

Though the school became nondenominational in 1855, it reflects its heritage through its holistic, child-centered approach and dedication to social justice and service. By learning to respect individual differences in intentionally small classes, presenting and sharing together in weekly All School Meetings, and working on service projects as well as group and independent research, students address real-world problems and tackle authentic tasks.

An integrated curriculum and inquiry-based, experiential approach firmly ground student in both fundamentals and higher level thinking skills. The curriculum is enriched by offerings in world languages, technology, art, music, drama, library, physical education and outdoor learning.

Early Childhood (Ages 3-5)

Early Childhood Education at the Friends Farmhouse consists of programs for three-, four-, and five-year-olds. It's philosophy has been strongly influenced by the schools of Reggio-Emilia, Italy, a world-wide movement that is transforming the way young people learn.  Housed in an 18th century farmhouse, a vibrant community of children are engaged daily in the joyful process of discovery.

Lower School (Grades K-5)

A typical academic day in the Lower School (grades K-5) is filled with books and stories, problem solving and lively discussions that encourage children to understand the relationships and connections between themselves and other students, the school community, society, and the planet.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Middle schoolers are encouraged to tackle academic challenges while developing strength of character and an ability to advocate for themselves. Increasingly they are called upon to take leadership roles in the school.  A dedicated faculty joyfully challenges them to think critically, solve problems creatively, and develop effective study skills. Graduates are energized, engaged, and well prepared for the secondary schools and colleges of their choice.

The Sally Borden Program

Based on the recognition that when it comes to learning styles, one size does not necessarily fit all, the Sally Borden Program, (grades 3-8) epitomizes Friends Academy's individualized approach to helping children fully develop their strengths. Seamlessly integrated within the school, the program provides flexible options for bright children who have language-based learning differences, which may include difficulty in mastering reading, writing, math, organizational, or study skills due to dyslexia or a specific learning difference.

This year's fall Open House will be held on Sunday, November 6th at 12:30.
