Jillian Zucco readies for Miss America

Mattapoisett — Mattapoisett resident and reigning Miss Massachusetts Jillian Zucco has arrived in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the Miss America competition. Zucco left Tuesday, Aug. 29, and will remain in Atlantic City through the competition on Sept. 10.

At the Aug. 30 Miss America arrival ceremony, Zucco was named one of five STEM finalists in the competition. There are 51 total competitors, one from each state and one from the District of Columbia.

As one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) finalists, Zucco will have an additional interview during the competition.

"I am excited to have an additional interview to discuss the importance of my STEM studies and nursing career with a distinguished judges panel," Zucco wrote on Facebook.

The Miss America pageant will air on ABC on Sept. 10 at 9 p.m.
