Marion — There were no strings holding down the Sippican Tennis Club's junior team July 27, when members served 16 other teams with a championship defeat.

The Marion Tennis Club's junior tennis team walked away with the 14-and-under team division prize on July 27, at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) New England Junior Team Tennis Section Championships.

Held at Harvard University, the championship tournament invited the top 17 advanced and intermediate tennis teams in New England to compete for a title.

Coached by Jesse Gotlib, the Sippican junior tennis team consists of eight young athletes from the tri-town area: Athena Kettner, Katie Holmes, Will Vrattos, Gracie McCarthy, Caroline Owens, William Hurlbutt, and Grace Russell of Marion, as well as Taylor Thomas of Mattapoisett.

According to Jon Kostek, the Youth Play Manager at USTA New England, the Section Championships are the end of the junior team tennis season.

The title winning teams at the Section Championships qualify for the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships. The top section teams will go head to head to compete to be the national champions in both the intermediate and advanced levels in two age divisions, 14 and under and 18 and under.

The national championships will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, in September.
