Marion veteran to lead Memorial Day ceremonies

Lieutenant Colonel Heather Bienz will be the keynote speaker at Marion's annual Memorial Day ceremony.

Marion — The 2017 Memorial Day Remembrances and Parade will take place on Monday, May 29, 2017, starting at 9 a.m. in front of the Music Hall at 164 Front St, Marion, MA 02738.

In the event of rain, the event will be relocated to the auditorium of Sippican Elementary School.

The 2017 parade and remembrances will follow a new route, stepping off from the Music Hall northbound on Front Street and marching half of a mile up Front Street to the Veterans’ Memorial at Old Landing. Upon arrival at the Veterans’ Memorial the town will pay tribute to our military’s “honored dead” who “gave the last full measure of devotion."

The parade and remembrances will feature the Sippican School Marching Band led by director Hannah Moore, The Portuguese American Band, a military veterans’ color guard and a police color guard. Students from Old Rochester Regional High School will also be taking part in the ceremony.

The master of ceremonies for the event will be Captain Andrew Bonney of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

The keynote speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Heather Bienz, MA ANG, the Executive Officer of the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base. Lt Col Bienz has served as an officer in the Massachusetts Air National Guard for five years, having previously served four years in the Connecticut Air National Guard and eight years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force flying the KC-10A Extender refueling aircraft.

Lt Col Bienz deployed more than 10 times in the years after 9/11, beginning with Operation Enduring Freedom, and was an Instructor and Evaluator pilot in combat roles, earning her two Air Medals and six Aerial Achievement Medals. Lt Col Bienz is a graduate of Nauset Regional High School in Eastham, MA. She earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA.

Lt Col Bienz was a lifetime member of the Marion VFW Post 2425 before it was retired earlier this year. She resides in Marion with her husband and children.
