Mattapoisett Fire Department holding Chowder Competition

Mattapoisett — The Mattapoisett Firefighter’s Association is holding its third annual Chowder Competition on Sept. 10 from 12-4 p.m.

The event is at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Route 6 in Mattapoisett. Tickets are $10, and can be purchased at the fire station or from any association member ahead of time, or at the door on the day of.

New this year, the event will kick off with a parade that will start at Ned’s Point Lighthouse and end at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The parade will be with fire and EMS trucks and police or military vehicles.

The competition has two categories – public safety and professional establishment. Awards are given to teams within each category. The public safety teams are local fire departments, police departments and harbormasters, while the professional establishments are restaurants.

During the competition, attendees will be able to sample chowders from 20-25 times, admire antique fire apparatus, buy drinks from a cash bar, purchase additional food, listen to music and learn about fire safety.

The Firefighter’s Association is a non-profit organization that helps support the fire department by purchasing fire or rescue equipment that it needs. It also supports local charities or youth sports.
