Rochester — Fall is in the air and football teams are hard at work. For Old Colony, all signs point to one thing: it’s almost time for homecoming. The school's Homecoming Weekend will run from Friday, October 13 to Saturday, October 14 this year.

Homecoming Weekend at Old Colony kicks off with a football game against Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Old Colony’s traditional football rivals. The homecoming game will most likely be the only football game of the year that is held both at night and on home turf for Old Colony’s football team, the Old Colony Cougars.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 13.

For anyone looking for the best seat in the house, Old Colony is raffling off “end zone seating.” The raffle winner will get to relax on the comfort of a sofa in the end zone, where they’ll be served their fill of food and drinks throughout the game for free. “We’re hoping to use the profits as donations for hurricane relief,” Old Colony Athletic Director Matt Trahan explained of the raffle, though he hadn't yet decided which charity the funds will go to.

“We’re hoping to get a big crowd at the Homecoming game,” Trahan said. Both Trahan and Mendez hope that they score a decisive win against rival Upper Cape.

Old Colony is getting ready for the game by preparing the officials, workers, and volunteers for a quality event. Trahan said that he will be talking to all of the teams to drum up excitement for the game. The team now is working hard at practices. There will be a lot of practices before the homecoming game.

At half-time, the school will honor the students who won state awards for SkillsUSA. Skills USA is a United States career and technical student organization that holds local, state and national competitions for each technical area taught in vocational schools.

The Skills USA ceremony will list the SkillsUSA medal winners dating back to the year 2000. Seventeen Old Colony students have medaled at the competition since 2000.

Varsity Football Coach Brandon Mendez noted that the court of the homecoming king and queen will also be announced during halftime.

Homecoming time also means time for suits and dresses; this year’s homecoming dance will take place in the gym at 7:30 p.m. The theme this year is “Passport to Paris,” and Old Colony’s gym will be decorated with a Paris theme. The homecoming king and queen will be announced during the dance.

Polansky is excited to open up Old Colony’s campus to the larger community, saying that he looks forward to welcoming guests. “The homecoming events could create a jumping off point for other community events in the future,” he explained.
