Mattapoisett — The Old Rochester Regional girls lacrosse team’s dominant season will continue.

The Bulldogs earned a decisive 17-6 victory over Milton High School on Tuesday in the first round of the Division I South tournament, advancing to a 20-1 record in their first season after being moved up to Division I.

Katherine Tracy opened the scoring early for ORR, netting a goal less than a minute into the game. The Bulldogs never looked back, pulling ahead by a score of 11-2 at half time.

“We’re playing with a chip on our shoulder,” Head Coach Scott Tavares said after the game. “To go 19-1 in the regular season and get the six seed … We didn’t get our fair shake.”

Tavers said that winning face-offs, limiting turnovers and maintaining possession were key to his team’s win Tuesday.

“It really all starts with the draw and we were dominant in the circle today,” he said. “We also wreaked havoc on [Milton] in the transition game and caused a lot of turnovers.”

Senior Madison Cooney, ORR’s leading scorer, lead the way for the Bulldogs, notching six goals on the day. Megan Shay and Tracy also scored four goals each.

Cooney is committed to play next year at Boston College, this year’s NCAA Division I runner-up.

“Most of the time she can do whatever she wants on the field,” Tavares said of Cooney. “She’s the ultimate teammate and the ultimate competitor.”

Still, Tavares said the Bulldogs rely on a full-team effort in order to be successful.

“I thought we did a great job of being balanced and spreading the wealth,” he said.

ORR will now be put to the test on the road as they prepare to play third ranked Duxbury High School in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Duxbury.

“Our girls are really locked in right now. We’re a team on a mission,” Tavares said. “We’re going to have to play our best game of the season Thursday in order to win.”
