Mattapoisett — More than 200 senior residents were served a hot turkey dinner on Sunday afternoon.

Old Rochester Regional Junior High School students spent their day serving a Thanksgiving meal to seniors in the community. About 130 eighth graders participated in tasks ranging from telemarketing to serving to cleaning up to make the afternoon happen.

“We start getting ready at 9 a.m.,” Toni Bailey, the principal’s assistant and event organizer, said. “Kudos to the kids and the cafeteria staff. They prepare all week. [Cafeteria manager] Carol-Lynn Brown is incredible.”

The school cafeteria was packed, a welcome sight after a wet start to the day.

“It depends on the weather, how many people come,” Bailey said. “It was raining but then the sunshine came out and the seniors start walking in.”

The event, a 27-year tradition, is a fun event for the community, Bailey said.

“The seniors start coming in and saving seats for their friends at 11,” she said. “It’s the cutest thing.”
