MATTAPOISETT — Hundreds of hungry diners turned out to the big white tent in Shipyard Park Tuesday evening, July 17, to sample the offerings of 12 local restaurants during the Mattapoisett's Women's Club's annual "Taste of the Town" event.

"We're quite pleased with the turnout," Eileen Marum, who co-chaired with Lois Ennis,  said as a long line of diners streamed in to the tent. "We're very happy everyone seems to be having a wonderful time.

Marum seemed happy that Tuesday's muggy weather was easier to deal with at the Mattapoisett harbor-side event as cool breeze blew across the park under threatening  skies.

Twelve local restaurants participated in this year's Taste of the Town, including Courtyard Restaurant, Mattapoisett Diner, Tastebuds Bistro & Catering, Walrus & Captain Bistro, Coffee, and Poi Juice Bar, On The Go Fine Foods, Catering & More, The Inn at Shipyard Park, The Slip, Oxford Creamery, Ying Dynasty, Nick's Homemade Pizza, Turk's Seafood Restaurant, and Uncle Jon's Coffee.

"All the money we raise from this event and our garden tour, as well as our pie sale at Harbor Days, goes toward school scholarships," Marum said.

The Showstoppers, a local youth singing troop, performed a variety of tunes throughout the two and half hour eating extravagana. The dining ended at 7 p.m., just as a heavy rain seemed to punctuate the event.

Marum said the money raised from all the Mattapoisett Women's Club fundraisers are dispensed in the spring. She encouraged people to purchase pies from the women's club table at the Mattapoisett Lion's Club's Harbor Days outdoor festival in Shipyard Park over the weekend to help provide scholarship funding.
