Rochester — A sizable gaggle of children made their way to Rochester's Plumb Library on Thursday, June 22, eager to start their summer with a concert from their favorite band - local favorite Toe Jam Puppet Band.

Band members Tom Poitras and Vinny Lovegrove have played together as the Toe Jam Puppet Band for 17 years, and have a standing weekly concert series at Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford. On Thursday, they brought their act to Plumb Library.

"I grew up in Rochester," Poitras told the crowd assembled on the lawn outside of Plumb Library. "I know some embarrassing things about Ms. Lisa [Fuller, Plumb Library Assistant]. Of course we won't tell those today, because she knows some embarrassing things about me, and that's really the definition of friendship, isn't it?"

Lovegrove played guitar, sung, and according to Poitras, wrote many of the songs the band performed. Poitras took the lead on singing and interacting with the band's eager young fans; he playfully sprayed the cheering crowd with water, employed the use of a bubble machine, and encouraged children to dance "like a monkey" (monkey hat included).

The theme of the library's summer program this year is "Build a Better World," and Poitras encouraged the children to unlock their own imagination. He encouraged each child to hold up the key to their imagination, complete with glinting sound effect.

The band's performance was funded by the Rochester Lions Club, who received a round of applause for their hard work, led by Fuller.

"You'll be happy for the rest of the day now," said Fuller as the concert closed.
